SCHOOL HEALTH INFORMATION
DCPS has partnered with Owensboro Health Regional Hospital over the past 20 years to provide nurses and health room assistants in all our school buildings.
We have nine district nurses that are able to delegate to their trained health room assistants (17) in the rest of our schools. Health Room Assistants provide first aid, comfort measures and administration of medication. Our nurses meet with parents to develop individual health care plans for the medically fragile children, provide assessment, staff trainings in the area of medication and emergency meds, provide classroom education on such topics as hygiene, dental care, health relationship and healthy choices and other related topics. Each of these nurses rotates between multiple schools with approximately 1,500 students and staff in their care.
In addition to meeting the individual needs of the student and his/her care, our nurses are responsible for CPR, use of AED’s, first aid, medication and BBP trainings for the entire staff in our district. Each school has an established medical emergency response team with annual drills and training.
The DCPS schools value these professional, educated individuals in our district and could not function in the capacity we do without their medical expertise.
